Walter Battiste was born on May 5, 1956, to his proud mother, Beryl Battiste. He was the oldest of five siblings and was raised in Harlem, New York. Walter attended New York City public schools and graduated from Louis D. Brandeis High School.

Walter held a variety of jobs throughout his life before beginning a career with the New York City Board of Education, where he worked as a clerical employee until his retirement.

Walter was a devoted family man who loved his family dearly. He was the life of every party and never missed an opportunity to enjoy good food at family gatherings. The last family celebration he attended was his 70th birthday, surrounded by all of his loved ones. He was overjoyed to have everyone together.

If you knew Walter, you knew he took great pride in his appearance. He always dressed to perfection, and no one could tell him anything when it came to fashion. He carried himself with confidence and style wherever he went.

Walter was also a devoted New York Knicks fan. Although he was under the weather and unable to attend the championship parade, he was thrilled and deeply honored to witness the Knicks win their first NBA Championship in over 50 years. He was also a proud member of the 92nd Street Neighborhood Reunion, Inc., where he enjoyed lifelong friendships and community fellowship.

Walter leaves to cherish his memory and mourn his passing: his beloved wife, Sheila Edwards; his mother, Beryl Battiste; his daughter, Samara Battiste; his stepchildren and grandchildren, Trenton, Trevon, A'mir, Shamir, Zahir, Dashawn, Kisanee, Tanisha, and Tyler; his sisters, Denise Battiste and Michelle Pierre; his brothers, Duran Fontaine and Juville Fontaine; his aunts, Delphine Lewis, Luella LaFranque, Louise Felix, Eugenie LaFranque-Christian, Madeline Bloice, Lillian Ishaann, Debbie Battiste-Mallory, Rose Moore, Marie Battiste, Amy Vanderbreggan, and Leona Marks; his uncle, Alvin Battiste; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends.

He also leaves behind his special friends, Raymond, Reggie, and Billy, along with his cherished friends and fellow members of the 92nd Street Neighborhood Reunion, Inc.

Walter will be remembered for his love of family, his infectious spirit, his impeccable style, and the joy he brought to everyone who knew him. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.
