Obituary

On June 15, 1953, the world was introduced to Vernel Julia Moorer by way of her parents, Eugene Moorer and Alyce Emma Robinson. As a student in the New York City Public School system and Private School, Vernel grew very fond of the arts. She was a passionate dancer who performed in school and in the neighborhood. With her love for things artsy, Vernel also played a musical instrument (the clarinet) throughout her years in Junior High School.  Not only was she skillful in the arts, but Vernel's strong legs allowed her to compete and excel in track and field. This well-rounded young woman was popular, respected, and well-liked by her peers.   Although there were many highlights, there were also trials, hardships, and obstacles that Vernel needed to overcome throughout her life. However, she had the opportunity to experience the redeeming power of Jesus Christ through His love and forgiveness. The realization of God's love for her transformed the latter years of her life where she sought restoration with her family.            Vernel was blessed with: five children, Kim D. Holmes, Naeem Asmar Holmes, Jamel Moorer, Ronald Holmes, and Courtney Lanere Smalls; four grandchildren, Deisia M. Hopkins, Troy Freeman, Ronald Edward Holmes Jr. and Leilani Grace Smalls; two sisters, Roberta E. Greatheart, and Deborah Moorer Faulkner; and a brother-in-law, Charles Faulkner. Vernel also leaves behind: nieces, nephews, and cousins who will all hold joyous memories in their hearts.   On Tuesday, January 5, 2021, this beloved mother, sister, grandmother and friend was called home to be with the Lord Jesus her Savior. She was a beautiful, wise, strong woman who loved unconditionally and encouraged the expression of oneself. Vernel believed that showing one's emotions is natural and healthy and should never be kept inside, even when it's hard. Although our hearts are heavy, we can smile at the life lived by Vernel Julia Moorer. Lovingly submitted by The Family
