Samuel Davis was born on April 12, 1922 to the late Theresa Bell Clark in Boydton, Virginia. There he attended primary school, completing his education. But, despite his limited education, he worked well with his hands performing various repairs and home improvements. After spending some time in Virginia, Samuel and his mother moved to Washington, D.C. and then later to New York City.
In January 1943, he enlisted in the United States Army, World War II, in the company of the 366 Engineer General Service Regiment as Technician Fifth Grade. He was honorably discharged in November 1945, earning the European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, WW II Victory Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal. Upon his discharge, Samuel was employed by the Monarch Luggage Company until his retirement. It was an on the job romance where he met the love of his life the late, Sylvia Barden. The happy couple were married by Bishop W.C. Gilliams at his residence on June 10, 1951. To this union, they were blessed with one daughter, Theresa Ann, or as Samuel affectionately called her "Tesa Mac"
He later joined Shiloh Church of Christ under Bishop's leadership, serving as a treasurer of the Senior Usher Board for many years until his appointment to the Trustee Board. He continued his work in the church under the former pastorship of Elder John H. Gray Th.M., becoming the chairman of the Trustee Board and serving as sexton. Samuel was the "go to guy" when it came to Shiloh. Whether it was opening or closing the church, fixing a problem, no matter how big or small, he was always there ready to work. After serving diligently for many years, he resigned his positions as Chairman and Sexton in 2003 and was later honored as Trustee Emeritus.
His health began to fail him in 2009 with hospitalization and later in the care of the Dumont Nursing Home in New Rochelle, NY. Samuel took emergently ill and was hospitalized on Oct 7, 2013. Due to the severity of his condition, he couldn't return home and was placed in the care of the Community Life Center at The Bronx Veteran Medical Center. On Thursday Decemeber 5, 2013, after a battle with dementia, Samuel took his final transition of life, and went home to be with the Lord.
He leaves to cherish fond memories: daughter, Theresa Ann; son-in-law, Jonathan Gray of New Rochelle, NY; three grandchildren, Jon Philip (Tasheema Sams) on Bronx, NY, Ivana Ashley, and Jasmine Juaniqua of New Rochelle, NY; one great-grandson, Jon Philip Jr.; goddaughter, Elder Toya D.
