Obituary

Bro. Robert Lee ("Lowell") Sims was born June 16, 1940, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to the late Moses and Annie Mae Sims. He was one of three children born to this union. One preceded him in death, Mildred Sims. Bro. Lowell was educated in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and graduated from Dillard High School Class of 1957. He migrated to New York City where he attended Electrical Trade School. Being desirous of moving forward in his career, he became employed at Macy's Department Store and served as Manager of the Bedding Department for over ten years. His career took another upward direction and he was employed by the MTA of New York City as a bus operator where he served with distinction for over 25 years. After retirement, he became anxious to continue his driving skill and joined Atlantic Express Bus Company as a School Bus Operator where he retired in July 2013. Bro. Lowell met his love, Ann B. White while driving the M1 Bus and they were joined in holy matrimony on August 9, 1997. They had a nickname for each other, he was "Sugar Stick" and she was "Sugar Baby". They worshipped together, travelled and lived life to the fullest. When you saw one, you saw the other. Bro. Lowell joined St. John A.M.E. Church in 1986 under the leadership of the late Rev. Leroy R. Judge and received Christ as his personal Savior. He loved the Lord and was a devoted member and continued to serve diligently under the current pastoral guidance of Rev. James E. Booker Jr. His favorite scripture was Ecclesiastes 3, "A Time for Everything" and his favorite song was "Amazing Grace". He served as Vice Chair of the Trustee Board, President of the Pastor's Aide Board, member of the Finance Committee and a member of the Male Usher Board. He loved his Church and the members and was always extending acts of kindness. He was known for his sharp attire, driving the senior members home, his jovial personality telling jokes and pulling ears. If there was any situation that needed addressing, Bro. Lowell was on the job. He even had a Victory Garden where he planted flowers every spring outside the Church, until his recent illness. Bro. Lowell was an avid photographer and captured many activities and events that St. John hosted. He was also an extensive collector of African American figurines and western movies, including boots and a ten gallon hat. Bro. Lowell loved family and people. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, brother, uncle to his nieces, nephews, cousins, God-children and a friend to anyone in need. He was such a giving and generous person who extended himself beyond measure. Bro. Lowell has created many fond memories that will be cherished forever by: his loving wife, Ann B.
