Upon graduation, he earned a basketball scholarship to Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. During his teenage years, he attended the Minisink Sleep Away Camp, where he was chosen for the prestigious Minisink Featherman program. While in this program, he learned essential skills for surviving the great outdoors; such as swimming, fishing, setting up campfires and other survival tactics.
