On March 19, 1921, Rebecca "Becky" was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith. Rebecca transitioned from this earthly address to her eternal home on Saturday, October 11, 2014.
Rebecca attended the Public School System in Wilmington, North Carolina. She spent her childhood through young adult years in Wilmington, North Carolina with the McMillan family. At the age of twenty three, Rebecca relocated to New York City where she remained until her death in 1995.
Rebecca was employed as a "presser" with the Garment and Cleaner's Industry for twenty two years. Her passion for clothing and style was transferred to her ability to meticulously iron and give life to garments. Her personality and credible work ethic landed a position as a "Domestic Engineer" where she was employed by several notable families and was often rewarded with generous gifts until her retirement. Upon retirement, she maintained a relationship with the Levin family until the age of 80.
In January 1975, Becky joined Mt. Zion AME Church where she was a dedicated and active member of the Edwards Praying Band, The Willing Workers, The South Carolina Club, and the Soprano of the J.L. Owings Choir. Becky was referred to as the Songbird and was often called upon to do solo renditions of "The Lord's Prayer" and "How Great Thou Art". Her passion for singing extended to her membership with the Inspirational Community Ensemble. Becky supported all of the ministries of the church including the feeding program.
Becky had many passions. Among them was bowling where she was active and traveled to participate in tournaments. In addition, Becky enjoyed the theater, book signings, and traveling to various cities with her niece, Barbara Jean.
Becky had a zest for life. Her tremendous love for family and friends was expressed through cooking and her fashionable presence-especially her high heel pumps. Becky shared her life experiences and the love for living with everyone, especially maturing men and women. This was her legacy.
Becky leaves to cherish fond memories: two granddaughters, Rebecca Jean Swankier of Tallahassee, Florida and Jennifer Thomas of Bronx, New York; three great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Deborah Haynes; two devoted extended familial nieces, Barbara Jean McMillan and Beverly Graham; the Mount Zion AME Church Family; The Mannie L. Wilson Towers Seniors Tenant Association; and the love of her life, her cat, Katt.
Done in love and sorrow,
The Family
