Pauline Wadley, affectionately known as "Lady P", was born to the union of Desmond and Mattie Will Griffin on March 17, 1935, in Taylor County, Reynolds, Georgia. She recieved her formal education in the Georgia and New York City Public School Systems. She was the second child of three children. Her brother Desmond and sister Mercedes preceded her in death.
Pauline married James E. Wadley, Sr. in 1951, and from that union came Debora Gross (aka Paulette Wadley) and James E. Wadley, Jr. (aka Sweetman, Sweeta) who preceded her in death as well. They cherished them dearly.
Lady P gave her life to God at an early age and has attended different ministries. In her early walk, she attended Goodwill Baptist for over 15 years, Refuge Temple for 5 years, Redeeming Life Christian Center for over 15 years, and finally her home church, Abyssinian Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir and a prayer warrior until her passing.
Lady P embodied the entrepreneurial spirit. She owned many homes, multiple dwelling buildings, stores and had other business ventures. She was no stranger to hard work. Pauline was involved in the Harlem community for over 50 years. She realized the importance of serving others.Often during the holiday season, she would ask people who lived in the community, "Who is the poorest family in the neighborhood?" She would then supply an entire Thanksgiving dinner to that family. During the Christmas season, she would supply toys, clothing, food, and cash to let people know they were loved and not forgotten.
Mommy was a natural born Mathematician. She was skipped twice in school and could add numbers faster than anyone with a calculator. She had a true love for education. Not having a high school diploma haunted her terribly, and at the age of 65, she went back to school and recieved her GED. There was nothing in this life, she believed, that she couldn't do. She ABSOLUTELY did it her way.
Lady P possessed an extraordinarily creative side. Having a flair for fashion, she never stepped outside without being fashion savvy and her make up well applied. Sophisticated, elegant, adventurous, magnetic, snazzy, sexy, gorgeous, the list goes on and on.
Lady P was a "guy's girl". She could dress like the stars, play basketball on the court, and dunk with the best of them. Having an alluring and charming personality was part of her success story. She embodied the scripture "Be all things to all men". Lady P could size you up in an instant and become what was needed for you in that moment. Mommy loved sports. She loved working out and being fit was an absolute necessity. You would never catch her hair or nails undone. I would say she was a "true georgia peach"; none were ever sweeter than her. Her personality and beauty was like nature; she was s soft as a summer's breeze, fine as a Sunday afternoon, and yet she was a FORCE OF NATURE. She never took no for an answer. If a goal was percieved and the end was already created then she went for it. Lady P always "REACHED". She enjoyed challenges because she believed that she could do anything but fail, through Christ. This was her constitution.
Every holiday season while growing up, Mommy would have to paint our home, apply wallpaper with the paste on the back, set up grand Christmas trees with angel hair, and no matter how much we complained, she had to have it because it was pretty. Beauty was her ideal goal. Whether it was in the way she dressed, the way she lived, the cars she drove, or the styles of her hair, it always had to be beautiful.
Lady P was a true artist at heart. She loved and enjoyed singing, dancing, writing, and poetry. Art was a big part of her life. She also loved to travel. She's been to most islands, but what she was most proud of was making the journey to Israel to see where Jesus died. Folks tried to discourage her from making the trip, but FEAR was never part of her agenda. She honestly walked with The Most High and proved it by the way she lived her life FEARLESSLY. The reason for her power was her ability to pray. Mommy always PRAYED UP. She always prayed faith prayers. She knew the power of the Most High and whether at choir rehearsal, on the phone with her prayer partner, or wherever, she truly believed that she had a DIRECT LINE to the Master and it reflected in the quality of her life. She served a BIG GOD and that enabled her to do BIG THINGS. She knew the MASTER would "NEVER PASS HER BY" because this queen recognized she was serving a GREAT KING!
A busy bee is what comes to mind when thinking of her, she was never idle. She was not one to watch TV. She had mountains to climb, people to meet, and businesses to pursue. One of her favorite pastimes was laughter. You would find her and Earnest Niel (aka Sunny), my stepdad, on the phone laughing it up. They really enjoyed one another. Another best friend was Mr. Walter Edwards (aka Blood), her mentor, protector, advisor, counselor and a man she honored and respected. Last but not least, she was friend to Mr. Earl Rawlins, Esq. her longtime attorney and friend. These people were so blessed to call her their friend and have her in their lives. I have to mention her four friends Louise, her prayer partner who prayed with her for years, Thelma Russell, her travel partner and ace boom coon, Lorine, her Riverdale buddy and Ethel he friend from church. These women really loved mommy and came to see her often in life and during her last days. They were such loving and giving women. In her last days you would find them bringing her cakes and pies. Lady P talked about them often and they loved each other so. Let me not forget to mention Deborah Nowella which she affectionately called singing Deb, her goddaughter, Pamela Mason and her daughter, Tameka. Those were her babies.
Charity work was extremely important to Lady P. She often made donations to East Calvary Day Care Center and Green Hope Services for Women. She would donate clothes and money for women trying to reclaim their lives. She had so much to give and often gave a lot; this was her legacy. She took it to heart when the scriptures say, "it is better to give than to receive". A true giver, whether it was time, advice, a prayer, money, clothes, advocacy, or a job, she was always about her Father's business. Lady P was a member of and served as secretary to the Harlem Business Alliance for many years. She loved her duties and spoke of it often. What a sophisticated lady she was. Nobody did it better; she was a grand ole gal, larger than life, a true light on Earth, and even with all of her femininity, she had the "ROAR OF A LION". She was a warrior in every sense of the word, and a fighter for the causes of humanity.
Lady P loved her boys Chavah and Desmond. We could always depend on her. She believed in them and helped guide them to become the men they are today. They cherished and adored her as well. Lady P has left her family with an awesome legacy and has paved the way for us to continue to REACH, SERVE, and LOVE all men. We are proud to say that we are her offspring. We have been extremely fortunate to have had such a guiding light and loving mother and grandmother. We have been truly blessed. Lady P was a champion who won the game of LIFE.
Mommy, Lady P, was well loved by all , and will be severely missed. Sleep on, Lady P. Take your rest for you have surely earned it. We all loved you but the Father loved you best.
