Michael Anthony Harvey passed away on May 24, 2014 at the age of 53 at Mount Sinai Hospital in Queens. His passing came as a result of health complications and sudden illness.
Mike, as most family and friends often called him was born and raised in East Harlem. A long time resident of the James Weldon Johnson Houses he attended Public School 57, Intermediate School 117, and NYC Technical High School.
Michael was first introduced to sports and recreation as a member of the Boys Club of NYC Gerry Clubhouse in East Harlem. His involvement with the Boys Club lead him to participate in bike tours, ping pong tournaments, bowling leagues, hockey and skate events. Mike also became very interested in photography as a hobby. He made a career of selling, repairing, and sharpening skates. He became so good at it that he was called "The Skate Doctor" and was featured in a Daily News article.
Michael also loved music, particularly the jazz of musicians like Bob James, George Duke, and Angela Bofil. He enjoyed live music concerts and could often be found during the summer months enjoying such events at J&R Music World and near the former World Trade Center.
He leaves behind his loving mother Laura Harvey, whom he spent his last days providing care for, and four sisters, Thelma Meyers, Renee Harvey, Gloria Harvey, and Veronica Horton. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Michael always treated people with kindness and lived his life happy and carefree. Mike had the incredible ability to remember names and said, "I think it is important to remember a person's name when you talk to them." Michael Anthony Harvey will be deeply missed by all who knew his name and loved him.
