Obituary

Mattie Mae Thomas, affectionately called Sister, was the second oldest of nine children born to the late Getty Thomas and Edna Carson on August 17, 1928 in Bowman, South Carolina. She met and married Samuel Lee Edwards and had three children Agnes, Leroy and (Joyce deceased). In 1957, they moved to Harlem in New York and had two more children Dorothy and Ralph. Samuel Lee was a factory worker and Sister devoted herself as a home maker and cared deeply for her family. A decade later Samuel and Sister had separated. Sister was left to raise five kids on her own. She put her feet on the ground and got a job cleaning schools at night. Determined not to give in, she went to school and achieved her GED. After completing a course in the hospital field, she was able to begin a long career as a Nurse's Aide at Sydenham Hospital and retired from Metropolitan Hospital 30 years later. The family struggled during those times, but she always was there to encourage us to do what was right. No matter how trying life was she would say in a whisper put your faith in God. She never turned her back or had any resentment but gave us the love and the care that was needed. One thing for sure we would never go hungry. As the family grew, she cared for her grandchildren and would do anything for them. We are saddened by the physical loss, but in our hearts, we will cherish the laughter, jokes and family time that we shared over so many years. We know that she is sitting with the angels and making them laugh too. She departed this life on November 30, 2020. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Essie Clark, Eartha Thomas, Sammie Thomas, Edna Clay, Howard Thomas and Rozella Thomas Berry. She leaves behind: her children, Lois, Leroy, Dorothy and Ralph to carry on; ten grandchildren, Jackie, Kia, Damion, Toni, Yvette, Ronald, Derrick, Adrianna, Ralph Jr., and Kevin; twelve great grands, Garland, Monet, Erica, Dayna, Sabrina, Jayden, Ethan, Jorden, Jada, Taj Monet, Gemari, Giovani, and Anastasia; son-in-law Richie, a sister, Adell; a brother, Danny (Papa); daughter–in-law, Francine Thompson-Edwards; and special friends, Michel Daly, Mariette and Charlotte; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friend. We thank God for all those who came to show their love and their condolences. The Edwards Family
