Obituary

Leon Alphonso Clarke was born in St. Croix, USVI on May 1, 1936. He was the third of four sons (Selmo, Camille, Alphonso, and Agustine) born to the late Ann Barry and Wilfred Clarke. He received his early education at St. Patricks School and was baptized in St. Patricks Church. Leon came to New York City and stayed with his Aunt Elaine (Barry) Cornelius. He worked at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan and retired after 43 years of faithful dedicated service. Due to ill health, he was unable to perform his duties. Leon was a polite gentlemen, very loving, giving and always encouraged young people to "go to school". He was a loyal Mets fan, an animal lover (Krispy, Tidy, Royal), and had a "green thumb", very good with plants. He greeted anyone he met, and no matter the time of day, you could hear him say "Good morning". He received Jesus Christ as his personal savior at St. John Pentecostal Church and later became a faithful member at Bethel Gospel Tabernacle. He attended the men's prayer breakfast, Tuesday night men's fellowship and men's retreats at Camp Joharie. He enjoyed listening to the Speech Choir rehearse. After rehearsing when he was asked "How was it?", he responded, "It sounds good". He met and married the love of his life, Marilyn in June 2005. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and church family. He went on several cruises. He liked the window seat on the plane, and was a back-seat driver after he was no longer able to drive. He succumbed to his illness quietly at home on Tuesday evening, March 28, 2017 and is resting now in the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He leaves to mourn and cherish fond memories: his dedicated caregiver and wife, Marilyn; one son, Kevin (Jacklyn) of Monroe, GA; one granddaughter,Sydney; brothers, Camille, O'Neal (Inez) Lloyd, Milton, Larry, Douglas, and Melbourne (Marie); two sisters, Kathleen Maccow and Dolores Braithwaite; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, coworkers, neighbors and friends. He is resting with the Lord.
