Julia DeLeon of Casabe Houses at 150 East 121st Street, New York, New York entered into eternal rest on January 18, 2014. Ms. DeLeon was the daughter of Francisco DeLeon and Margarita Bernard. She was born in Rio Grande on the island of Puerto Rico on June 22, 1936. Ms. DeLeon married Juan Calderon in 1953 and became the mother of two children. Mr. Calderon lived until 1960 and upon his death, Ms. DeLeon relocated to Spanish Harlem in New York City. In NYC she met and married Daniel Salgado in 1964 until his passing in 1971.
Ms. DeLeon was a creative woman and always had an interest in fashion. Her career in fashion started with intimate apparel in Puerto Rico. When she relocated to New York in 1960, she pursued her career as a professional seamstress and worked with companies such as Ann Taylor, Donna Karan, Liz Clairborne, and many others. Ms. DeLeon often designed, altered, and created clothing for her family and friends.
Ms. DeLeon loved cooking especially rice, beans, roast pork, pasteles, lasagna and especially coquito during the holidays. She would have family and friends over to eat, and even delivered food to her lovely neighbors at Casabe. Everyone enjoyed her cooked meals. Music and dance were Ms. DeLeon's passion. She enjoyed listening to bolero, salsa, merengue, bachata, reggaeton and Las Danzas de Puerto Rico. She often held parties in her apartment with food, music and dancing.
