Mr. John Louis Allen was the son of the late Ruben and Florence Allen and oldest of three brothers. He was born on January 25th, 1922 in St. George, South Carolina.
At the age of 21, he joined the U. S. Navy where he served with the 17th Fleet in the South Pacific and traveled the world during World War II. He received an Honorable Discharge as a U. S. Navy Seamen, First Class.
He met a strong, beautiful black woman named Rosebud (Annie Ruth) McCants and solidified their union on August 30, 1949. Through this union. they created four beautiful children, Michael, Connie, John Lennie, and Charlotte Linda Allen. Mrs. Rosebud Allen was laid to rest on February 24, 2009. Although this was a difficult time for the family, it warmed our hearts that he always rejoiced and was always proud of having been married for fifty-nine beautiful years.
Mr. Allen was a part of the historical Second Great Migration in the 1940's - 1970's and resided in New York, NY, where his beloved wife and children soon joined him.
Mr. Allen was a dapper man all of his life. Anyone who knew him knew that he loved to dress with style. He either wore his cap backwards like these youngsters, or his Fedoras tilted slightly to the side. Anyone who has been impacted by his life knows that he was an absolute gentleman. Grandpa loved spending time with his daughter, Linda Allen, on the weekends - watching sports and dancing in fact, something special they loved to do together. and enjoyed nothing more than the time he spent with his beloved daughter. He would always request for Olivia Little to prepare her infamous turkey wings to share, as it was his favorite meal to have with his daughter. He was also a man of wisdom and instilled knowledge into his grandchildren as well as all his great grandchildren. He taught Eric and Jeremy how to be respectful, and calm men. Jeremy remembers Grandpa encouraging him to "always be your best self". As for his granddaughters, he always stressed how a real man should treat you. His granddaughter, Rhonda, reminisced about how he never complained - but when he said something he said it with a strong voice coupled with love and care. CiCi and I remember it was through his actions that showed us how he remained strong, poised, and sometimes silent - but very observant and showed us the qualities to look for in a great and honest man. He enjoyed the company of all his great grandchildren. His great granddaughter, Anaszia Kelly, affectionately called him "PaPa", and she will miss singing, laughing, teaching him new games, reading books to him and dancing with her great grandfather.
His ascension took place at the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System on June 3rd, 2021 in the morning. It is comforting for the family to know that he will be greeted at the Gates of Heaven and be hugged by his mother, his two brothers, his wife, three of his children, and his nephew. We all shall send him off with love in our hearts, memories to last for generations and glory to God.
Mr. John Louis Allen leaves three surviving generations he created during his lifetime to mourn and cherish fond memories: his daughter, Charlotte Linda Allen; her half-sister, Patricia Carn; his grandchildren, Eric Allen, Nicole Allen, Charcanne Shattler, LaShawna Weston, Jeremy Allen-Adams and Rhonda Walker; his great grandchildren, Nasir Fitch, Keira Shattler, Xavier Shattler, Traevon Allen, Iyoni Franklin, Toraé Allen, Anaszia Kelly and George Walker.
