Obituary

Janie Lee Pinckney-Smith the third daughter of the late Freddie and Christina Pinckney of John's Island, South Carolina. Born, October 17, 1932, Janie attended school and spent her childhood years in South Carolina. She had three sisters, all of whom predeceased her, Rena Pinckney, Sarah Davis and Anna Simmons. At an early age, she moved to New York City with her Aunt Gladys. While in New York City, she gave birth to her son, Nathaniel Smith. As the matriarch of the family, Janie helped bring her sisters, nieces, and nephews to New York City and nurtured them until they got on their feet. She was employed at Henry Hudson Hotel. Her last employment was working in a physician's office for many years. She married Mr. Henry Frazier. To this union, two daughters were born Audrey and Demetra Frazier. Janie was a dutiful member of the Order of Eastern Star. She worshipped at Greater Central Baptist, where she served as an usher. Later in life, she affiliated herself with the church family of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Janie loved traveling and cooking, especially her collard greens and red rice. Her favorite holidays were the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. She longed to be in her John's Island home with family and friends surrounded by love and food. Throughout her life, she had many ups and downs. The Lord has been so good to her. Through the rain, storm, and sickness; Janie kept the faith and held on to God's unchanging hand. Janie was a strong woman who played by her own rules. She would always say: "I pay the cost to be the boss". She departed this life on Sunday, January 10, 2021, leaving to cherish fond memories: son, Nathaniel (Alethea) Smith of New York; daughters , Audrey (late Robert) Smith and Demetra (Bernhard) Mann all of New Jersey; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends in New York and South Carolina.
