Obituary

On March 31, 1941, in the city of Birmingham, Alabama, the Lord chose Rosie Wheat and Alde Hackett Sr. to be the parents of a beautiful baby girl named Janell Hackett, the youngest of three children. Young Janell grew up to be a dedicated mother who had six children. She was a resident of Harlem, where her son, Billy Johnson, provided her superb care as her primary caregiver until the Lord called her to eternal rest. She received her formal education from the Alabama School System. In 1969, she migrated from Birmingham, Alabama to New York City. It was not long after she arrived in New York City that she was adopted into the Grant family by the late John and Bernestine Grant and the Ingram family by the late Mother Thelma Ingram. She devoted her life to her family. As a mother, she took pride in raising her children. She was stern and tough yet caring; she simply didn't play when it came to them. In addition to raising her children, she also assisted in raising her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She was a nurturer who never hesitated to show her love by cooking, cleaning, soothing a restless baby or giving words of wisdom. She was a people's person and used her quick wit and sense of humor to help people. Her smile and laugh were infectious! Children and adults loved her. That's why she was affectionately called "Grandma, Grandma Janell, Auntie Janell, Big Red and Big Al". Janell was a huge football fan. For many years, her favorite team was the Dallas Cowboys. On game night, you could find her in front of the television yelling and rooting for her beloved teams. We would joke with her and say, "Grandma you can't have six favorite teams". She would reply, "I can have six teams if I want, that way I'll never lose". She also loved driving a Chevrolet. She was the Chevy Lady. She would say, "It's got to be the Chevy baby- a red Chevy". Red was her favorite color! Mother Janell Hackett accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior over thirty years ago. She served faithfully on the Usher's Board, Missionary Board, and the Amazing Grace Choir under the leadership of the late Apostle William Brown at Salvation and Deliverance Church in New York City. She was a dedicated soldier and didn't play any games when it came to doing the Lord's work. She later moved her membership to Kelly Temple in Harlem under the leadership pf the late Bishop James H. Gaylord in 2018, she returned to Salvation and Deliverance under the tutelage of Apostle Jerome King. She served faithfully on the Amazing Grace Choir until her health declined. Janell departed the life on September 12. 2021 at Calvary Hospital Bronx, New York after a lengthy battle of illness. She fought long and hard until God gave her wings to fly home. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, two brothers, and a son. She is survived by her lovely children, Carrie (Clyde) Alderman, Lisa Hackett, Billy Johnson, and Augustus (Danielle) Ingram; sixteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; six godchildren; seven god sisters; four god brothers; special friends, Helen Campbell, Johnnie Mae Carter, and Walter Carmichael; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
