Obituary

Helen Brown, daughter of the late Sarah & Vandy Sumpter was born on August 27, 1929 in Elloree, South Carolina. Helen grew up in the small community of Elloree, South Carolina where she received her education at the Elloree Public School system. She married John Brown in 1947 until his death in 1971. Helen moved from Elloree, SC to Harlem in 1947 with her late husband. She worked at Bogen Communications a telephone paging system in Paramus, NJ for 30 years. Helen loved to travel the world. She was always on the go. She also organized regular bus trips to Atlantic City with her friends and family. She loved to dance and always requested the Electric Slide at least 2 times at every gathering. Helen loved to bowl. She was a member of the Jersey Swingers bowling league which she participated in weekly tournaments in New Jersey. She won many trophies for scoring a perfect score with her famous shimmy throw. She was an excellent cook. Her specialties were sweet potato pie and cabbage which she had to make regularly for every family function. Helen lived at the E.M. Moore housing located at 160 West 116th Street for over 35 years where she hosted many family and holiday gatherings with her dear friend Miss Parker. Helen was a member of the Mt. Zion AME Church located at 1765 Madison Avenue on 116th Street for over 60 years where she served faithfully as a President of the Women's Missionary society, President of the Hospitality Ministry and Vice President of the Health Ministry. She was known as Mother Brown to many members of Mt. Zion AME Church. Helen truly loved her Mt. Zion family. Helen had a strong faith in God and devoted her life to serving her family and Church. Helen leaves to cherish fond memories, her children: Josephine (James) Greene of New York, Phillip (Lucille) Brown of South Carolina and John Brown of New York. Brothers: James (Hattie) Sumpter, Richard (Rebecca) Sumpter, Cornelious (Margie) Sumpter. Grand children: Monica Brown Hercules, of New York, Michael (Nikki) Brown of South Carolina, Phillip Brown of South Carolina, Melissa Jaton Greene of New York, Aleeya Greene of New York and Tinaija Brown of South Carolina. 13 Great Grand Children, 5 Great Great Grand Children, a host of Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and Friends who all love her dearly. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her partner Nathaniel Warren, Son, Samuel Brown, Sister Annie Mae Asberry, Brothers, Vandy Sumpter Jr., Clarence Sumpter Sr., Grand Son Michael Palmer, Nephews Clarence (Junie) Sumpter Jr. and James (Stevie) Sumpter.
