Harold
Smith
Jan 20, 1957 — Jul 16, 2025
Harold "Pete" Smith was born in New York City in 1957 and raised in Harlem by his parents, Juanita
Hairston Smith and Harley Smith, alongside his two siblings, Veronica and Melvin. He earned the
nickname "Pete" after someone compared his energetic entrance into a room to the theme song from
the classic television show Peter Gunn.
Harold attended I.S. 117 and later graduated from Julia Richman High School. After graduation, he
enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves, where he served honorably in several locations, including Germany,
working as a cook and in various other roles. After his honorable discharge, Harold returned home to
Harlem. Over the years, he held many jobs, including butcher, security guard, and handyman. Eventually,
he became a full-time employee of the NYC Parks Department and a proud DC 37 union member. He
dedicated 25 years to NYC Parks, working at several recreation centers including Thomas Jefferson (Thom
Jeff), Asser Levy, and Sorrentino in Far Rockaway. He advanced to the role of pool and recreation center
supervisor before retiring due to health reasons.
A true Son of Harlem, Harold was well known and deeply loved in his community. His booming voice
could be heard from blocks away, and he never failed to make friends wherever he went. He was a
devoted father who adored his "four girls and my boy," as he would fondly say, and he took immense
pride in his grandchildren. He was a patient big brother, a gifted athlete, a talented bass player in high
school, and a skilled craftsman and plumber. A true jack-of-all-trades, Harold could accomplish anything
he set his mind to. His friendships were meaningful and long-lasting, and he was always ready to lend a
helping hand. He loved to travel, but his heart always belonged to Harlem.
Harold was predeceased by his parents, Juanita Hairston Smith and Harley Smith; his brother, Melvin
Smith; and his wife, Linda Evans Smith.
He is survived by his loving sister, Veronica Darrell; longtime companion Lorraine Thompson and their
beloved children, Shartina, Shartele, Shartora, Shartrice, and Terrance; his grandchildren, Darren Jr.,
Latrice, Ayden and Veronica; his cherished nieces and nephews, Damion, Nicole, Darnell, Brandon, and
Kwincey; and a host of extended family and friends who will carry his memory in their hearts.
