Harold Eugene Gates, was born August 3, 1932 in Hampton,Va. The son of Georgeanna Pleasant and Willie Gates, Harold was raised by George Brown Sr. He died on Sunday, September 19th at age 89 at his home in the Bronx, NY.
As a young boy, Harold was diagnosed with gangrene. The doctors wanted to amputate both of his legs; however, his mother and aunt nursed him back to health. After missing school due to his illness, he discontinued his studies, and secured employment to help his family.
As a young man he moved to New York City, where he me this wife Virginia. He worked multiple jobs including being a teamster for many decades. Harold was a great lover of music, and dancing! His favorite song was "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong.
Harold was predeceased by his wife Virginia. He is survived by six children: Carolyn Ann Goodwin, Barbara Jean DeRiggs(John R), Harriet Rush (Leroy Jr.), Harold Eugene Gates Jr., Keith Gates (Latisha), Gregory Gates (Moikgantsi Kgama);grandchildren: Shawn Rush, John A. DeRiggs, Keith Imperati,Jordan Imperati, Najah Gates, Nazir Gates, Jalal Gates, Jasiragates, Bilal Gates, Aisha Gates, Saliha Gates, Muawiyah Gates,and Gregory Kgari Kgama-Gates; great-grandchildren Matalina & Amara'Li Imperati, and Jeremiah Imperati. He is also survived by five brothers: George Jr., Sherman, Tryone,David and Doug Brown; and a host of nieces and nephews,
several sisters- in-law and one brother- in-law.
