Gladys Coleman was born in Harlem Hospital on November 22, 1941 in New York City, New York, to James E. Coleman and Francis Jackson. She along with her siblings were raised in Harlem.
Gladys, affectionately known as Sissy by her family, was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and cousin to her large but loving family.
She was educated in the New York City Public School System, attending PS 90, IS 136 and then Julia Richmond High School. Gladys formerly worked for Bell Telephone Co., Bell/Atlantic and then the Leukemia Society Foundation. She was also an active advocate within the school system and a member of the PTA. After retiring, Gladys enjoyed reading, shopping, crossword puzzles, traveling and especially being in the company of her grandchildren and other family members. Her children and grandchildren called her "Maw".
Gladys left us on the afternoon of March 25th 2021. She is preceded by her husband, David "Sarge" Baughan; parents, James E. Coleman and Francis Coleman; sisters, Helen, Eleanor, Doris, Ruth; and brothers, James (Bubby), Clifford and Leon.
Gladys leaves to cherish her fond memories by: her loved ones, which includes her beloved children, Lamont, David (wife Sheena), Kelly, Jo, Dana and Michael; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; her sisters, Thelma, Frances and Saundra; several cousins; nieces; nephews; special daughters, Kim, Barbara and Lisa; and her close friends.
