Obituary

EMMA EARLENE BRUCE, one of seven children, was born to the late Charlie and Martha Broome, on Monday, February 28, 1927, in Columbia, SC. She was loving, kind and very determined, even with her education. Emma was small and mighty, with a feisty spirit, and it was manifested as a teenager, when she too, refused to give up her seat on the bus, just as Rosa Parks, with a reply, "I tell you one thing, you better not be on this bus at the last stop." Her determined spirit and zeal followed her throughout her life, even to the point of owing no man anything. After his return from the military, she met Cleveland Bruce (affectionately known as "Bubba"), and they married on July 30, 1946, in Columbia, SC. To this union, God blessed them with eight children. Although young in marriage, the entire family moved to New York, in the mid 50s. Emma was a devoted wife, until her husband's death at the age of 38 and, mother, as she raised her eight children to be excellent and productive citizens in their community, including now deceased daughter, Sandra Bruce Thomas. She loved her family, and also loved to cook and bake, loved plants, her nick-knacks, and crossword puzzles. Emma Bruce always wanted to serve God, and she prayed "the church that has your truth let that bible worker come back to my house." The Bible worker returned and she became a member of the Bronx Seventh-Day Adventist Church on Washington Avenue, in Bronx, NY, where she was a faithful and devoted Christian for many years. She was kind, affectionate, disciplined, and spiritual. She loved music, and her greatest joy was praising the Lord. Emma served faithfully, as a Deaconess, and worked in the Dorcas Department (now known as "Community Service"), and volunteered with church food distribution. Above all, she was a Mighty Prayer Warrior, bringing one right in the presence of the Lord. She loved to share the love of God, with her family, as on many Sabbaths, she would bring her children, and soon her grandchildren, including now deceased grandson, Dermont, in her room, telling Bible stories, doing her best to prepare them for Heaven. She rose above any health issues, with no complaints, and trusting in the Lord. On March 20, 2022 at 2:00 am. Emma quietly went to sleep, after fighting a good fight. Emma Earlene Bruce was preceded in death by daughter, Sandra Bruce Thomas, and grandson, Dermont Bruce. She leaves to cherish her memory, sister, Bernice Doctor of Columbia SC; children, Pastor Wesley Bruce and his wife Toni of Rockledge, FL; Patricia Bruce of Manhattan, NY; Gideon Bruce of Bronx, NY; Beverly Stewart of Bronx NY; Patty Goodson of Yemassee, SC; Drucilla Mack of Bronx NY; and, Jennifer Bruce Campbell of Durham NC; grandchildren, Eldesa Bruce; Frank Stewart and his wife Tonya; Selena Bruce; Akiesha Wilson; Tamika Mack; Paula Mack; Lawrence Goodson; Melissa Stewart; Karl Glenn Wilson; Syreeta Bruce-Sigaran and her husband Michael; Wesley Bruce III; Andre Bruce; James Bruce; Jaren Stewart; and Jermaine Bruce; forty-two great-grandchildren; eleven great-great grandchildren; and, a host of nieces; nephews; love ones; friends; and, church family.
