Elouise Nesbitt White was born in Huger, South Carolina on January 24, 1922. She was the seventh of ten children born to Florence Simmons Nesbitt and Scipio Nesbitt. She left South Carolina with her husband Henry J. White and arrived in New York City on September 7, 1941. To this union five children were born. A church-going woman, Elouise joined Harlem's Metropolitan Community United Methodist Church in the 1950s where she was an active member and served on the Church's Channel and Kitchen Committees. Her children attended the Church's Sunday School, sang in the Church Junior Choir, and participated in other church events. For many years, Elouise worked as a domestic and child-care provider. Eventually, she gained employment as a Food Service Attendant at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City until her retirement in 1987. Along with raising her own five children, she was a beloved and trusted caretaker of hundreds of other children. Elouise loved to travel, but she had never been on an airplane. She traveled by bus, car and train, and had visited Canada several times, the Grand Canyon, Florida, Mexico and many other destinations. Oftentimes, she would take one or more of her grandchildren on trips with her. Elouise was known for her love of cooking and loved to watch people enjoy her food. She was a woman of wisdom, and her favorite advice to all who met her was, "Make a dollar…save a quarter." Nothing was more important to Elouise than God and family. She departed this life on December 6, 2020. She was predeceased by her oldest son, Henry Allen. Elouise leaves to mourn and cherish fond memories: sons, Charles White (Vera) and Lester White (Maria); daughters, Kathy White (Lenny) and Lisa White-Tingling (Milton); daughter-in-law, Marjorie; grandchildren, Ryan (Whitni), Tiffany, Christa, Jasmine, Kiana, and Khiry; great-grandchildren, Helena, Keith, Parker, Sydney and Nylah; goddaughter, Millicent Maynard; daughter-in-spirit, Shavette Thompson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends.
