Obituary

Dorothy Mae Floyd Williams Alston, affectionately known as Dish, departed this life to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 11, 2014. She was born in Rembert, South Carolina to Josephine Floyd on November 28, 1936. In 1945, at the age of eight, she and members of her family moved to Harlem and this town became her lifelong home. What separates a talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work and Dorothy had many talents; she was a wonderful role model, a caring mother , great cook, a seamstress, a home decorator and very handy at fixing almost anything around her home. Known for her infectious laugh, she made others laugh because her laugh was contagious. Dorothy loved her family unconditionally and wanted nothing but the best for each and every one of them pouring out heartfelt statements like "you never know what tomorrow may bring" in keeping with her faith. For her children, when we looked into her eyes, it was the purest love you can find on this earth. She looked forward to and loved the holidays especially Christmas and during many Thanksgiving holidays she would prepare great southern cuisine. Her passion was watching her daily soap opera TKC (The Korean Channel) in English subtitles which kept her mind sharp. When it rained no matter what time it rained, she would go and gaze out of her kitchen window because she like being in the moment. A repositor of family history was what she chronicled creating meticulous notes on all sorts of organized collections of data constantly on a daily basis for many years. Losing a loved one is always hard, but losing one's mother is even more devastating. Although our hearts are saddened by the death of our mother, we know that God in His infinite wisdom never makes a mistake. With recognition of His great wisdom and our unfailing trust in Him, we move through this period secure and comforted with the knowledge that God has called our mother "Home"; "Safe in His Arms" is where she is. She leaves to mourn and cherish fond memories: her five children, Doreen Veter, Sharon Renee, Cynthia June, Albert Benjamin, Jr., and Michael Anthony; her very special friend (daughter), Jeanne (Jenny) Loudon; five grandchildren, Jameke Lamont, Reginald Lamont, Dominique Benjamin, Sharday Linette, and Naveah Angelique; one great grandson, Reginald Dartayne; four sisters, Arthur Mae Covello, Annie Mae Gholson (Charles), Victoria Nelson (Joe), and Cynthia Vasquez (Wilfredo); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Dorothy was a kind and gentle person who was committed to family, a person of faith, and an indominable spirit who encouraged her family to persist in the face of many struggles.
