Delores Lavern Clark was born on May 12, 1935 in Pompano Beach, Florida to Ernest A. and Lucretia Clark. At age 5, her family moved to Clark County (now Jackson), Alabama. In 1947, the Clark's moved to Harlem. They soon joined Harlem's Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. In 1954, in the same church, she married her husband of 58 years, the late Robert L. Stevens, Sr. who passed March 4, 2012.
At a young age after having her tonsils removed she found her calling... to become a nurse. She went on to attend the New York City Nursing School on Welfare Island (now Roosevelt island), graduating in the class of 1955. Previously, Delores attended the Wadleigh School and then graduated Washington Irving High school in the class of 1953.
Alongside her mother, Lucretia, she was one of the first black nurses to work at Lenox Hill Hospital. She also worked at New York City's Harlem Hospital and Doctor's Hospital. She had a long and fulfilling career in her chosen field.
In the mid-1950's Delores, affectionately known as Verne to many, and her friends formed the social group Le Fleur De Lis providing formal social events in the Harlem community.
Delores Stevens was called a friend by many, from her childhood friends, her classmates from nursing school and neighbors.
She has gone on to join her parents; her husband; and two brothers. Cyrus Lee Clark and Ernest (Bubba/B.C.) Clark.
She departed this life on March 11, 2014 and leaves to cherish fond memories: her four children, Tyrone C. Stevens, Roberta D. McCartney (Douglas), Dorianne L. Stevens and Robert L. Stevens, Jr. (Kristen Stevens); seven grandchildren, Tyrone II, Evelyn, Dorian-Robert, Jason, Bryan, Taylor, and Cameron; and two great grandchildren, Karilyn and Timothy. Her home-going is mourned by several aunts, cousins, sisters-in-laws, and a host of nieces and nephews.
