Obituary

Charles A. Steward Sr. was born in Denmark, South Carolina, to his proud parents, Ernestine and Henry Steward, on December 13, 1930.  He was the second born of seven children.

Charles completed his schooling in South Carolina.  He migrated to New York City along with his brother, Alfred, for better job opportunities and settled down in the Bronx, NY.  It was during this time that he met and was enamored by the beauty of a young woman named Frances Dennis. They fell in love and were married on April 9, 1953. They settled down in East Harlem and were blessed with four beautiful children: Sylvia, Charles Jr., Gary, and Carnell.

After many dedicated years in the construction business, Charles retired and continued raising his family.

Charles was a devoted husband and an amazing father. He was well-respected in the community. On most mornings at approximately 7 a.m., you would be sure to run into Charles picking up the newspaper and Big Mack to play his lucky numbers. His kind spirit lit up the neighborhood, from the barber shop to the supermarket. Everybody loved Mr. Charles.

Charles was a diehard New York Yankee fan and enjoyed watching the games every season at his leisure.  One of his favorite lines was, "Let's go, Yankees!"

After an admirable 92 years of life, Charles was called home on Saturday, April 8, 2023. He goes on to join his parents; his beloved wife, Frances; his daughter, Sylvia; and sons, Gary and Carnell; his brothers, Alfred, William Henry, St. Clair, Louis; and sister, Marystine.

He leaves to mourn and cherish fond memories: his brother, Leroy (wife Viola); sister, Kalifah (husband Abdur); his eldest son and best friend, Charles Jr. (wife Kindra); daughter, Brenda; his son-in-law, Michael Sr.; his grandchildren, Michael Jr., Nikki, Tiffany, Cheyanne, Tyriek, Carnell Jr., and Olivia; and his great-grandchildren, Javontay, Jacob, Jamir, and Savannah. He also leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

Charles' legacy will continue to live on through the lives of all those that he touched.
