Obituary

Cecelia Barrett, affectionately known as "Puncy" to friends and "Nanny" to loved ones, was born on November 20th, 1924 in Port Maria, St. Mary, Jamaica West Indies. The daughter of Cornelius Barrett and Matilda Anglin, she was the third of fourteen children. She attended Port Maria Secondary School. After leaving school Cecelia went into business for herself. She met Stanford Jones and together they had 8 children, 6 girls and 2 boys. Arlene "Lull" Jones (deceased), William "Willie" Jones, Patrick Jones (deceased), Sonia Jones, Claudette "Sandra" Jones, Marcia Jones (deceased), Patricia "Polly" Boothe, and Valerie "Joy"Jones. Nanny was a "no nonsense" business woman, never afraid of anyone and was a constant fighter. She knew adversity and how to overcome any obstacles. The best example of this was when she was attacked and robbed in the store she owned, resulting in her losing total vision in her right eye. The incident only made her stronger and more resilient. She continued running her business successfully until she migrated to the United States in September 1986. She was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Harlem. She was passionate about singing, whether on key or off, and if you sang along with her you better know the words and the right note otherwise she would tell you, "you sing like the song that the cow dead left". Always opinionated she passed on life lessons to anyone she spoke to, often quoting psalms and parables. Ever the storyteller Nanny knew how to make everyone in a room laugh. She was very feisty and jovial, full of life. While at Bay Park Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation she constantly kept the staff laughing with her jokes and humor. Other than singing, her other favorite pastime was playing Solitaire and never missing an episode of "The Price is Right". She is survived by 1 Sister, 3 Brothers, 5 Children, 16 Grandchildren, 48 Great Grandchildren May her soul rest in peace until we meet again in eternity.
