Caleb ("Red") Spencer passed away in his sleep at his home on June 6, 2014.
He was born on January 16, 1924 in Sumter, South Carolina. His grandmother, Lucinda Spencer, lovingly reared him and definitely made a positive impact on Caleb's life.
After going through the school system in Sumter, he was employed at Shaw Field (Shaw Airforce Base) and worked in various positions. A few years later, he moved to Newport News, Virginia in which he held different jobs. In the 1950's he moved to New York and then met and married feisty Martha McIntyre in 1957. This loving union brought forth two daughters, Carmen and Betty. He loved his family dearly. During that time, Caleb was employed in Construction in Greenwich, Connecticut in which he retired from in 1989.
The next happiest day in Caleb's life is when he became one of Jehovah's Witnesses. He was baptized in January 1983, twenty years after the baptism of his wife. Caleb was determined to serve Jehovah no matter what happened. He became a Ministerial Servant for the East Harlem Congregation. For many years, he handled the magazines, as well as performed other duties. He truly enjoyed being with the friends in the field ministry. In fact, he quoted many times Rev. 21: 3,4, Matthew 24:14, and Daniel 2:44 to whomever he met. He firmly believed in the promises that Jehovah made about a new system and the resurrection of the dead, and shared this with many people, including his relatives.
Caleb was a very mild-mannered person and had a sense of humor when it came to certain aspects of life. He helped many people and was a very hospitable person. When he was able to entertain relatives and friends in his home, he made definitely sure that they received plenty food to eat. In his spare time, he enjoyed the music of Duke Ellington and Count Basie. Caleb liked shopping, going from store to store. Many times, friends and neighbors remarked that they had seen him walking fast, pushing the store cart down the street.
Caleb is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Martha; his two daughters Carmen and Betty; three sisters: Hermon McCoy of Sumter, SC, Geneva Pettiford (Floyd) of Atlanta, GA, Elizabeth Brown (Clifford) of East Orange, NJ; three sister-in- laws: Johnnie Atkinson of Los Angeles, CA, Katie M. Freeman of Wilmington, NC, and Theresa Corbett McIntyre of Atkinson, NC, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews and other family and friends.
He will be deeply missed by all
