Bobby Eugene Dickens, the son and eleventh child of 13 in the union of the late Gertrude Maggie and Herst Monroe Dickens, was born on July, 7, 1938 in Raleigh, NC.
He completed his earthly quietly Sunday morning, June 14, 2015. His parents preceded him in death in addition to his siblings: Clarine Dickens, Melvin J. Dickens, Willis L. Dickens, Margaret D. Malone, Georgia D. DeFreese, Daniel U. Dickens, Ruthie D. Trotter, and Clarence N, Dickens.
Bobby grew up in Raleigh, NC on Carrabus Street where he enjoyed family activities with his siblings and cousins. Bobby graduated from Washington High School then joined and proudly served in the United States Navy. There was where his fondness of travel and adventures began. He later lived in San Diego, CA, Yonkers, NY and Philadelphia, PA. He was employed with the United States Post Office and as a Switchman with New York Transit Authority before retiring and returning to New York City.
Bobby was many things to many people: dancer, supportive uncle, family reunion historian, story teller, and a good friend. He was intrigued with calculating opportunities, games, risks, and surveys. He followed and detailed golfing events, played cards, and loved talking with the young ones. His positive attitude was an inspiration to his coworkers and to those who loved him dearly. He was proud of his heritage and researched tirelessly to gather information. He was good with children and good to children and they loved him in return. Bobby communicated well but his silence also spoke volumes. He took pleasure in his privacy being his time; suprisingly, you might have heard him singing opera.
Bob leaves to cherish his memories: sisters, Daisy D. Marshburn of Houston, TX and Betty Jean D. Williams of Lake Mary, FL; brothers, Charles H. Dickens (Margie) of Bel Air, MD and Lawrence T. Dickens (Helen) of Raleigh, NC; special friends Mary Outlaw, a good friend and companion and Sha-Keya who he nurtured as a daughter; and a host of dearest nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
