Obituary

Mrs. Betty Wendler, daughter of Edward and Dora Crooks, was born on December 11, 1926, in Commerce, Georgia. She was the youngest of four children. Preceding her were her sisters, Alberta, and Hattie, and her brother, Clarence. Betty was 94 years old. She arrived in New York City at the age of 14 and attended Wadleigh High School. She married Albert Wendler at the young age of 17 on June 10, 1944. Betty had four children, Joseph (deceased), Albert (deceased), Marilyn, and Gloria. Betty took pride in raising her children and being a stay-at-home mom. When the children were old enough, she started working for the city in the Parks Department which included working in Gracie Mansion, under Mayors Lindsey and Beam. Betty worked for the Parks Department for 20 years before retiring. After retiring, she volunteered at a mentoring program to help guide young single mothers with their day-to-day household responsibilities which included financial literacy, nutritional guidance, and child rearing. Betty also was a member of the Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church for more than 50 years and on the Usher Board for many years, where she met many friends, especially Mrs. Victoria Davis. Vicky was extremely helpful to the family. When Betty was stricken with Alzheimer's, Vicky would stay with her every Monday night to make sure she wouldn't leave the house. Betty lived a long physically healthy life with her family around her. It was the Alzheimer's Disease that took a toll on her. She was the happiest when surrounded by family and friends. Betty is survived by her children, Marilyn and Gloria; grandchildren, Tracie, André, Jamal, Monique, and Asia; great grandchildren, Tahshawn, Brianna, Judah, Kaelyn, Brave, and Jaliyah Rose; and a host of family and friends.
