Alfred Joseph Smith, was born the 5th of six siblings born to the late Charles Smith and Dorothea Gomez Smith. He was born on October 11, 1943. Alfred was born and raised in Harlem, NY. He attended grade through high school in the NYC Public School system. He then went on to work various jobs, the last from which he retired, was with The Salvation Army as a delivery driver. He was blessed to have loved and married two times in his life, Brenda Washington and Lenora Ferreira. From these unions, his four children were born.
Alfred accepted the Lord, as his personal Savior, at a young age. He grew up in the Catholic Church and in his later years, he would become more non-traditional in his faith and attend different church services on Sundays. He would frequently fellowship with Refuge Temple in the heart of Harlem.
Alfred was a man that loved adventure! It would be nothing for him to trek to some exotic Caribbean Island with no hotel reserved, meet a native of the island upon arrival, strike up a lasting friendship, be introduced to an inexpensive hostel, and stay for a month. He would repeat these actions many times on different journeys. Alfred was a carefree spirit and lived life on his own terms. He was a foodie and loved to dine out at different 5-star restaurants. He was an avid reader and would spend countless hours at the library daily. He was a man of culture and enjoyed engaging in the fine arts of theater, museums, and concerts whenever he was not just hanging around the neighborhoods of Harlem. He loved the outdoors! In earlier years, he would go camping and hiking in Upstate NY with his oldest daughter and the "Bey & El Explorers". He liked to brag about those excursions often. His staple attire was, a white button-down shirt, a pair of khakis and sometimes he would add suspenders for a little flair.
Alfred leaves behind a legacy of good works. He was dedicated to his family and had a great love of and faith in God. Alfred, a willing worker, returned home to God, his Father on May 23, 2022.
Alfred was preceded in death by one sister, Bernice Baughan-Hawkins and two brothers, Herbert Baughan and David Baughan. Alfred's precious memories and love will be cherished and missed by: his three daughters, Leesett, Charisse, and Ashley; one son, Ravanna; one sister, Shirley Trotter; one brother, Anthony Smith; one aunt, Gertrude Gomez Glenn; seven grandchildren, Justin, Adhama, Satomi, Jada, Jeremiah, Sameigha and Levi; three great-grandchildren; Mason, Malachi, and King; eleven nieces, Valerie, Kelly, Michelle, Belinda, Theresa, Taisha, Jessica, Matea, Naomi and Shelby; six nephews, David, Kim, Lamont, Dana, Jeffrey and Anthony; one sister-in-law, Barbara Baughan; and a host of cousins, family, and friends. He is an ancestor now and will continue the good work on the other side.
Alfred, we think about you always. We talk about you still. You have never been forgotten and you never will. We hold you in our hearts and there you will remain, to walk and guide us through our lives, until we meet again.
