Growing up in Kingston, Jamaica, her favorite hobbies were singing and dancing. They gave her the nickname Cherry, because she was a sweet person that was filled with laughter and fun. She was known as Sister Cherry to her children.
At the age of 17, she graduated from school. She taught herself how to sew, and became a very good dressmaker over the years. In fact, that is how she came to America. In the 60's, America was recruiting seamstresses. Rhoda took the test to become a seamstress in the united states and made it.
In 1975, Rhoda married the late Ronald Nembhard. Rhoda was blessed with three children, Annmarie, Richard and Douglas. In order to make a better life for herself, she had to leave Annmarie (Peggy) and Richard in Jamaica. Shortly after she came to the states, where Douglas was born.
However, when she came to the united states, she didn't pursue sewing as her career. Instead, she became a Nurse's Aide, devoting the next 30 years of her life caring for the elderly.
Rhoda was a fun-loving person who would tell you exactly what was on her mind. Singing dancing, and cooking were some of her favorite things. After retiring in 1999, she spent the next 20 years doing what she liked. Most of all, she liked going to Atlantic City, and hanging out with her friends and especially her grandchildren, Amesha, Shari and Steph.
Rhoda McCoy passed away on August 10, 2020 at 6:15 p.m. at Terrence Cardinal Cooke Nursing Home.
