Robert Harold Campbell, also known as “Clipper” and “Big Bob,” was born on September 25th, 1948 in Harlem, New York to the late Robert and Rosetta Campbell. The oldest of four siblings, he attended DeWitt Clinton High School, his father’s Alma Mater, to play basketball on a winning team. Upon graduation, he earned a basketball scholarship to Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina.

During his teenage years, he attended the Minisink Sleep Away Camp, where he was chosen for the prestigious Minisink Featherman program. While in this program, he learned essential skills for surviving the great outdoors; such as swimming, fishing, setting up campfires and other survival tactics.

During his college years, he would meet and marry his sweetheart, Barbara Thomas.

After Shaw University, he would further his studies at Fordham University, where he earned his Master’s Degree. After Fordham University, he returned to the Minisink Camp in Harlem where he attended as a teen, to became a Site Director for the Harlem Teens Recreation Center. He was in charge of all recreation activities there; organizing basketball and pool tournaments, table tennis and chess competitions. His time there was his way of giving back to the Harlem community.

He later evolved onto a higher position at Roberto Clemente State Park in the Bronx, where he was an Assistant Recreation Supervisor for many years. There, he arranged and organized various programs and recreational activities; with his main program being the Governs Cup Basketball Tournament. It was one of the largest basketball tournaments of its time, during his tenure.

“Big BOB”, as many people called him there, was highly admired and respected in the sports recreational world. He helped many youngsters get involved in sports to improve their focus and competitiveness; opening doors to compete for athletic grants and scholarships.

Bob Campbell was very intelligent, charismatic and had an incredible sense of humor along with his illustrious credentials.

Robert Campbell is loved and survived by: his son, Robert Sean Campbell and his daughter, Cherisse Tara Campbell; his sisters, Carolyn Paul and Zarita Holness; his brother, Bruce Campbell; his grandkids, Shayna, Brandon, Brittany and Sadie; his cousins; and multiple nieces and nephews.
